about

(From Shon Baker) The majority of The New Day Bends Light was composed months after I wrote this poem:

take this moment... with strength
the new day bends light shaping it to calm
in shadows
we shall not succumb

The poem, sung by Tammy Scheffer, was inspired by the aftermath of a personal and emotionally-taxing event in my life. Shortly after, I slipped into “survival mode” and descended into a darker state of being. Fortunately, my prior rigorous personal and shadow served to alert me that I was starting to spiral. I instead took a period of deep introspection that allowed me to ground and bring myself back to a more desirable mode of existence.

The brief melodic statement starting at 1:23, played by Scott Reeves (alto flugelhorn) and Peter Hess (clarinet), is the only section of the music that was composed prior to the poem. I wrote it shortly after the aforementioned event while at a very low point. Immediately I set it aside, mentally scrapped it, and decided it would never see the light of day. Months later, shortly after feeling better, I wrote the poem. I recalled the “scrapped” melodic statement, drew its connection to the poem, and composed the rest of the music around these two contrasting moments. Featured is a meditative alto flugelhorn solo by the one and only Scott Reeves which beautifully captures the introspective nature of this time period.
