about

(From Shon Baker) The catalyst for In Dreams (meetings that could never occur) was a very brief dream that I had many years ago. I became lucid during the dream when I realized a conversation that I was having with a specific person could not occur in my waking life. There was nothing at all extraordinary about the conversation, and the person with whom I was speaking was still living, however, for whatever reason, I just understood that this particular interaction was impossible. Upon this realization, an intense feeling of terror came over me. I tried to call for help but could not vocalize, nor could I move. This very brief moment of suspension still intrigues me to this day. I attempt to recreate it in certain parts of the composition, particularly leading up to and during the tenor sax solo, played by Quinsin Nachoff. After the tenor solo, rather than waking and attempting to end the dream, as I did so many years ago, I let everything continue organically, which proved to be quite cathartic. The piece concludes with a trombone solo by Nick Grinder, symbolizing a semblance of peace and acceptance within the unresolved.
