about

(From Erica Seguine) ...and the Tire Swing Keeps Spinning... has been a long-held image and metaphor I’ve had of a major depressive episode. When I was in elementary school, my best friend and I would take turns pushing/ spinning each other on a tire swing in the playground, making up some imaginary story that went along with the journey. The idea was that whoever was going for the ride would, partly due to dizziness, lose grasp of the “real” world and be completely engrossed in the story that was being told. I liken the spinning rumination of thoughts and gradual deterioration of the mind to the image of a tire swing gaining momentum, endlessly spinning into a journey from innocence, down an increasingly darker abyss. The twelve-tone row (a melody where all 12 notes of the chromatic scale are included without repetition) introduced in the right hand of the piano in the beginning is the constant that undergoes this gradual transformation throughout the piece.
